( I'm leading services tonight. )Normally, this would not faze me. But the Rabbi is in Israel, the 5th grade is having its Shabbat, the Scouts will be here, we have a visiting confirmation class from the Lutheran church down the street, there is a dinner beforehand that I am coordinating and a group of people leaving for Israel to be blessed. Did I forget anything? Oh, yes! Birthday Pencil Shabbat.
And, to add to the fun...
Two recent deaths in the congregation, more expected any minute. Major lay-professional hassles affecting no less than 3 main committees and the Board.
Somewhere in there, I should be delivering a 5 - 6 minute dvar Torah. Of course, this week is all about rules. Since the 5th grade is there, I could point out that, in this Torah portion, a child who insults his parents can be killed. Or I could point out to the Board that this portion also has rules for the treatment of slaves.
Maybe I should just tell a story.
