I was just lucky enough to have my oldest friend from college get sent out here on a business trip. She came to stay with me for the weekend, and in between the LONG naps we both needed, we got to talk about all sorts of wonderful things. All about...

*How turning 40 is a Good Thing (if you take your glucosamine);
*How we're nervous that we don't have kids to look after us in our old age;
*How DUMB we were at age 20 and how we wished we'd made more of those mistakes (throws kisses to errant blacksmiths, track jocks, computer programmers and martial arts weenies);
*How marriage is still a crapshoot and the fact that our group of 5 friends from college has gone through 9 weddings is disturbing, if demographically average;
*Peri-menopause SUCKS but the possibility of the end of menses is devoutly to be wished for;
*"Due South" rocks.

Ok, so it wasn't all earth-shattering. But there is something so enormously comforting in sharing a bit of your life while it is in progress and going well with a friend who knew you back before you even had one. She reminded me of the night we sat outside our college dorms (in February - what were we thinking?!) and talked about whether or not to drop out. I think we were both failing Music Appreciation class or some other wildly unnecessary course.

We decided we were glad we hadn't.

I reminded her of the time she henna'ed her hair and eyebrows bright red and looked like Bozo the Clown for 3 straight weeks until the damned stuff faded.

She wished I hadn't.

I love her dearly and am so grateful she loves me just as I am, too. We intend to be Awful Old Women together. We're just trying to figure out how many cats we should have in our ramshackle and deteriorating Victorian hulk on the hill.

Have you called YOUR old friends this week?
