It's a lovely sunny day here, so I thought, "What better time to actually put together the emergency earthquake kit I've been told to have for several YEARS now?"

Well, you haven't had fun until you've tried to imagine what you'll need in the event that every modern convenience and social service you depend on is out of commission. Try calculating how much water you'll need if you and your household have to survive for a week or better -- then try lifting it. (Hint: 1 gallon of water weighs 8 lbs) Then think about what just happened in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and discuss whether or not you and hubby should buy a handgun or a shotgun or one of each.

How fucking depressing is that?

It's not that I'm not for gun control legislation - quite the opposite. But my personal definition of "gun control" includes the caveat that *I* be the one to control the guns in any situation where they start getting waved around. Which means that I am actually considering buying and owning a firearm again.

See above comment on "fucking depressing".

The more ruthlessly practical part of me says to stop whining, box up the damned Power Bars and waterproof matches, stick the fire extinguishers in useful places and make a decision on the subject.

Any thoughts?
